Be prepared for others to call you a troublemaker, but don't feel that you have to defend yourself against them.

Frequently Asked Questions

About DanceDimension.com project. About balloroom dancing. About Dance Partner Search. About Health and Fitness Cult of Alexander's personality.

Q: What is this DanceDimension.com anyway?
A: DanceDimension.com in non-commercial pet-project of an amateur dancer hanging out in New York City. Initially the reason for this site was simple need to make electronic notebook that could be accessable both from home and from workplace.(addresses of studios, schedule of classes, etc.) Then the founder, Alexander Panchul was driven by perfidious goal of picking up more girls for his dance practice. He was too lazy to write custom-made seducing letter to each of them, so he decided to put some of his thoughts to this site. Let those who is nice to be seduced and those who is useless to be repelled the hell out of his sight.

Q: Is this site really non-commercial?
A: I know a lot of people who make money in ballroom business. I myself is amateur. With this my site I am not building up an opposition, I am building a bridge from professionals to amateurs. And welcome cooperation from either side.

Q: 'Sasha'... - isn't it girl's name?
A: In countries of former USSR 'Sasha' is mostly man's name - diminutive from 'Alexander'. It's like 'Richard' - 'Dick', 'Robert' - 'Bob', 'William' - 'Bill'. 'Ira' is common girl's name.
If you know any Alex who is Russian or Ukrainian, ask him about his name. He might be 'Aleksey', but, most likely, 'Alexander'. If he is 'Alexander', sure he was called 'Sasha' most of his life. Other diminutives from 'Alexander' are 'Shura' and 'Sanya'.

Q: Where dancedimension.com's icon came from?
A: The icon you can see on the top of the site was made by my own object oriented distributed multi-platform ray casting system written from the scratch just for fun during mostly lunch time. And this icon alone is something hundred times greater than the whole site, which is nothing but exercise on web-programming(also very far from what I am usually paid for)
I have extended background of mathematics, computer, physics and, you won't believe it, ballistic thermo-nuclear rocket science (cool, huh?)

Q: This name, DanceDimension sounds familiar...
A: About similarities with the name of this my web project. There are other sites and entities that have names alike. I don't have anything to do with them. Originally I had in mind another name, but after I had been blabing about it it somehow become recently registered by somebody else. At that time I picked up 'dancedimension.com' and it was available. I do have great ideas for a new names, but don't want to switch just yet. Current one is surving it's purpose by giving me nice opportunity to test my concepts and operating potential.

Q: Alexander, what is your horoscope sign?
A: I am a Leo. Fire Signs rule.

Q: Is it true that you are one of the most stunningly attractive men in the world?
A: Yes. Beyond doubt. How did you know?

Q: What is "Pro-Am"?
A: "Pro" stands for "professional", "Am" - for "Amateur".
It is when dancing couple has two people with diametrically opposite motivation. One wants to learn and spend as less money as possible, the other one wants as much money as possible and don't really want to give away all wisdom.
At Pro-Am competitions judges supposed to evaluate only amateurs, but it is usually complicated by internal politics in ballroom business.

Q: What do I need to do to start dancing?
A: If you want to dance you can start to dance. Two legs is nice to have. To get general idea of all the necessary stuff, you might find useful information in 'Dance School' chapter of this site. Or click the tab 'README'. When you learn a few moves you might stick to 'Syllabus' chapter - this is where many of choreography is written down.

Q: Alexander, what was that Viennese Waltz step we danced the other day?
A: It is spelled 'Fleckeryll', not 'flick-roll' and not 'that-fancy-thingy'. Man's footwork for Reverse Fleckeryll is: FSFSBSFSFSBS First 123123 is similar to Reverse Turn, then rotation can be repeated many times in a row. There is a sequence of Contra Check and Pivot to switch to Natural Turn or Natural Fleckeryll.

Q: What should I put into my Dance Partner Search Ad?
A: Beside of truthful information about your weight and age, you have to be realistic about your integrity. Write about your level, where you dance, how often, etc. Keep your comments like a woman's skirt: long enought to cover the subject, but brief enough to keep audience interested.(See chapter Dance Partner Search Hints for more.)

Q: Ok, I put myself on a market; I filled out the dance partner search form. How soon should I expect responses?
A: If you had your way, everyone would take a number, and you'd only call the next one when you were good and ready. In reality, you may not get any responses at all. Sorry for bringing you down to the earth.

Q: What are the best ways to gain weight?
A: To gain weight you need to consume more calories than you burn up. To do it efficiently, and to make the weight muscle, not FAT, you'll need to start a weight training program. You want the weight to be muscle, not FAT. To do this you'll need to slowly increase your caloric intake, usually by eating another meal during the day or by using a weight gain supplement. Make sure the food is protein and carbohydrates and not FAT. Give it time. 10-15 pounds of muscle in a year is pretty good. (See chapter README->Health for more.)

Q: Which teachers are better - younger or older?
A: Ballroom industry is a very serious business. It is not burglary or obtaining money by false pretenses, but rather a judicious selection from the best features of those fine arts. What do you mean by 'better'? Age-wise general tendency is like this. When teachers are young, they often are eager to dance and view selling of dance instructions as more or less the way to make ends meet. Only when competing days are over they get really proficient in meaningful interaction with students. However, by that time they might forget how to dance.

Q: why do people need a dance partner?
A: If you want to be good at anything you have to practice often. For ballroom you need a partner because it is partner dance. You can fake connection by pressing wall or hold a door, but let's face it, working on technique with pleasant partner is more satisfying. Sure if you can not dance without a partner you can not dance with partner, but if you can dance by yourself you may still be unable to dance with somebody else.

Q: I'am hispanic and really don't no how to dance salsa well at all my husbands family are really into dance but will not be bothered by teaching me so I would really like to learn where do i start. My main concern is that I am shy and can be embarrassed easily. What do i do. How do you over come some thing you want to learn so bad?
A: It is always tough for beginners. But don't panic, more advanced dancers only look like they "not be bothered by teaching" you, they do have patience to wait till you get up to speed. Don't be shy, just listen to the music and follow the leader. I think best places to pick up salsa culture is not ballroom studios, but clubs. Check out Copacabana on Friday night: 560 WEST 34TH STREET at 11TH AVENUE good luck.

Q: Some steps in different dances look similar, is it just a coincidence?
A: Well, all dances deal with a human body, so they create the funcion of a movement of the same object. If you will "stratch" timing of one music into another you can reuse a lot of things. For example, you can reuse SSQQ American foxtrot steps in waltz by replacing first Slows with a hesitation:

S 123
S 1
Q 2
Q 3

Waltz to Foxtrot:

1 S
2 Q
3 Q

Rumba with Mambo steps: just start with QQ, not with S, and make cha-cha chasse to switch to QQ from S.

Q: I have really great binding with my coach. He has the best height for me. I love his style. I think he really wants me to learn dancing. And he is also so handsome. Do you think he wants me to become his professional partner?
A: Not only that, but also I am sure he has set his mind to ask you to marry him later this week. And he is shopping right now for a mansion on Upper East Side in New York City where you will practice that marvelous Merengue routine for your competitions at Blackpool next year. It is so lucky of you to become another Julia Roberts from "Pretty woman".
